The last of the methods I want to mention is when one paints an object(s) in darkness by using a flashlight (not a strobe or speed light) or a laser. In addition, if you are feeling creative, one can strap colored gels over your light source using painters' tape. (I found painters' tape works the best leaving no residue on the gels). The gels add color to your painting light and will give your photos a bit more punch. Any stray or planned ambient light is a bonus since it can add a surreal look and feel to your shot.
Note: If you do include ambient lighting in your shot make certain the light doesn't overpower your scene and render your light painting into one large, messy blur of white light resulting in washing away your work with too much lighting.
Moreover, the sample photo (above) shows this described technique. More information on painting with light can be found using the link below.
Lastly, painting with light is a just plain fun and a good exercise that anyone can have success with as well exercising your creative powers.
