Light Falloff

So what is it?

According to my resources, "Light falloff can be used to vary the relationship; between the light on your subject and your background..." Meaning, when you place your main light source close to your subject (but not so close you wash out your highlights) the falloff between your subject and the background is more distinct. The opposite holds true when you move the light farther away the background becomes comparatively brighter.

The same principle holds true for side-lighting as well. A close sidelight the falloff of light across the frame is more pronounced than if farther away.

Quick tip:
If one is shooting indoors and the subject is front-lit by window light, keep your subject closer to the window so the rooms back wall fall off into darkness. This should give your portrait a clean, uncluttered background.

Of course, if there is a cute drawing of a pony on the back wall and your subject is in a cowboy/girl outfit, then move the person back closer to it and farther from the window.
