A fellow photographer and I had a discussion regarding negative space in people portrait work. I took the side of "Fill the frame and get close".
The opposing viewpoint was balancing the "Fill the frame" technique with harmony and good flow in the shot as a work of art. Where by you leave some empty space to help frame the shot with some variation of light, dark, form, shape, color, or lines.
To be honest, I have never given much thought or study to the topic of negative space in my portrait work, at least not on a conscious level.
