One tip, or suggestion, I didn't mention about compensating for strongly back lighted subjects and scenes is to use your camera's flash for fill light to balance the Lighting difference in your background to the subject.
I've posted some of my own photos as examples here but
the link (below) gives excellent examples of the difference between using fill flash vs none. (This is for Mohammed or anyone interested in how to compensate for back lit portraits).
