Zoos are wonderful places to observe animal behavior up close, humans included. They are also a good place to hone your photography skills. Some tips and hints when shooting at the Zoo.
- Take advantage of cloudy days to keep contrast and harsh shadows to a minimum.
- Shoot early and late. Feeding time is best but, be prepared to get a spot early to avoid competing with the crowds.
- Pick a favorite animal and concentrate on it.
- Wait for intimate behavior and interaction,
- Avoid glass exhibits, the reflections will ruin your shots.
- Travel light. Take one lens for all situations. My favorite for a walk about lens that covers all of the focal lengths is my Nikon 18-200MMVR.
- Wear a shooting vest too rather than carrying a shoulder bag.
- Don't feed the animals:-)
