Speedlight Lighting Modifiers...

It's all done with mirrors

Those of you who shoot with speedlights (on camera flash) have probably figured out by now that their lighting  is not always the most flattering for your subjects.

Joe Farace, in this months SHUTTERBUG December issue, reviews an innovative tool that seems to solve the harsh light dilemma that many other light modifiers have not. He reminds us in the article that:

"Most speedlight diffusers work in a similar way: translucent material is placed in front of the flash head to scatter light and soften shadows, but many times that light doesn't scatter and some gets lost."

He goes on to review and show photo samples using the new system Graslon modifiers. The Prodigy and the Insight. One, for larger speedlights, the other for smaller ones.

Both come in two flavors: A dome shape that spreads the light everywhere like a bare bulb to take advantage of bouncing light off walls, etc. The other is a flat version used ideally for fill flash in a no bounce situation.

They use a proprietary optical reflector system (mirrors) to redistribute the light from the speedlight before firing it through a diffusion lens to soften edges, and reduce shadows to create a more natural looking shot.

The Prodigy costs $99.95 (street price) The smaller version Insight is $69.95. In my view both are worth a look and maybe the investment http://www.graslon.com. Judge for yourself and check in at their website.

The full review with photos is in the December issue of SHUTTERBUG. Pick up a copy of their magazine or head to your local public library. http://www.shutterbug.com/

Happy flashing!
