I have always been of fan of "street photography", admiring the works of photographers from the past, such as Capa, Winogrand,Henri Cartier-Bresson and more.http://dbeckerman.wordpress.com/defining-street-photography/
Of course, the key to street photography is getting out and being brave enough, and friendly enough, to get some results. Something I have always had problems with myself.
Sometimes, it is easier for the photographer (and less nerve wracking for beginners and nervous nellies) to pick a busy people spot or an interesting bustling corner at lunch time. Then, camp out there, with your camera ready while you wait, observe until something passes by that clicks your shutter into action. Patience and the ability to blend into the background helps too.
To those folks who are not interested in having their photo taken by a stranger, respect their privacy when they defer.
However, many folks are flattered you want to take their photograph and one returns the favor with prints to the subject.
Therefore, a friendly face, the gift of gab, and listening will serve you well.
A few more quick tips:
If you are the lurker type rather than the "hi how are you, mind if I shoot your photo" type, then use a long lens, which allows you to keep your distance, approach from the back to a shooting area where people are gathered. In addition, street photography isn't always in the street, nor do the photos always have people in them, although many do.
Lastly, you may get better results, and not appear as scary to strangers, if you dumb down or use simpler, smaller equipment. A camera with a shorter lens means moving in closer to your subjects but often results in a great candid shot with a more natural look.Quality point and shoots and even cell phones can be ideal for modern street photography.

Thank you for the tip. I am going to set up my camera with its biggest lens atop a mammoth tripod on a corner in downtown Phoenix, then fire away. Spray and pray as they say.
Dear S&P
I would like to observe your efforts, please advise time and place.
Spero
