Happy (Pagan) New Year!

The New Year celebration begs the question, just how did all of this start?

In the Bible, (I'm quoting now and standing near a lightning rod just in case) Exodus 12:2 states "This month shall be unto you beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you." Then, it goes on to name Abib or Nisan, which correspond to March or April that coincidently is the time of Passover or Spring in the Roman calendar. There's more in Genesis, which gives us the break down of the days, weeks and month, bla, bla bla.

However, there is still no mention of the New Year falling on January 1st in the dead of winter, hmmm? Moreover, according to Biblical history, God made his calendar known to Israel when he brought them out of Egypt. In addition, we know the Roman calendar descends directly from the Egyptians, who originated the 12 month year, 365 day system...from the Journal of Calendar Reform. September 1953, footnote p.128. Therefore, we come to the realization that the entire Roman calendar is of Pagan origins (moving closer to the lightning rod).

It all makes sense now: What occurs on New Year's Eve? Drunken orgies, men kissing other men's wives and more we can't mention here. Lastly, further investigation shows that some historians think that April Fool's day used to be New Year's day - "All Fools Day" from Encyclopedia of Religion. However, in fact, our New Year's festivities originated in ancient Babylon, moved to Greece, and finally to Rome. The Romans called it Saturnalia a time of drinking, hooting, orgies, overeating, and other foul deeds not intended as part of a Christian holiday.

Now having said all of that, Pagan or not, and despite the fact we suffer from the same worldly troubles we had a way back in 2009, my New Year celebration conjures up nostalgia, sweet memories, and puts a sniff of optimism in the air for me.

SO...HAPPY (PAGAN) NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
